Louisiana authorities have closed the floodgates surrounding the east bank of Orleans Parish Tuesday  to protect the area from Tropical Storm Isaac as it approaches landfall.
The Times Picayune reported that all 127 perimeter floodgates  have been sealed.
Tropical Storm Isaac has been rolling over the Gulf of Mexico toward Louisiana, forecasters say the storm will likely sustain hurricane-force wind by the time it hits the state’s swampy coast early Wednesday.
The forecast track has the storm aimed at New Orleans, but hurricane warnings extended across 280 miles from Morgan City, La., to the Florida-Alabama state line. It could become the first hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast since 2008.
