Igor Eric Kuvykin Obama vows help to battle Tropical Storm Isaac
Igor Eric Kuvykin
President
Obama vowed to make available the full force of the federal government
this morning as New Orleans braces for its biggest storm since Hurricane
Katrina seven years ago."We're dealing with a big storm,
and there could be significant flooding and other damage across a large
area," Obama said. "Now is not the time to tempt fate. Now is not the
time to dismiss official warnings. You need to take this seriously."
Obama was seeking to get an early start on the federal response for the benefit of Gulf residents -- but also to avoid the slow response to Katrina that hampered George W. Bush in 2005.
"As president, I'll continue to make sure that the federal government is doing everything possible to help the American people prepare for and recover from this dangerous storm," he said. Igor Eric Kuvykin

Samsung stock skids, Apple pops on $1B patent verdict
NEW YORK
–
Apple's $1 billion court win against Samsung is translating into a much bigger jump in its market value.

Apple
shares rose on the news while Samsung's stock dropped 7%% in overseas
trading. It trades over the counter in the U.S. Any further gains in
Apple's stock boosts its market capitalization, which is already at an
all-time high while Samsung's market cap plunged $12 billion Monday.
Investors
are selling Samsung shares because the court loss could remove Samsung
products from the market and saddle it with over $3 billion in damages.
The jury, which found that some Samsung products illegally copied
features and designs from Apple's iPhone and iPad, awarded Apple $1.05
billion in damages with a finding of willful infringement that gives the
judge the option to triple damages.

Investors appear to be betting that the verdict
will make it harder for Apple rivals to ride on the iPhone's
coat-tails. In particular, it's likely to slow the growth of Android,
Google's operating system for smartphones. It's used by Samsung, HTC,
LG and Motorola, now a division of Google. Shares of Google, maker of
the Android operating system, were down 1.4% in trading. Shares of
device maker HTC, whose devices run on Android, were also down in
overseas trading. It, too, trades over the counter in the U.S.
Apple
scored a jury victory on three key patents that cover software features
in Android. Those patents cover functions that allow Apple device users
to easily scroll pages, zoom out on images or tap to enlarge text, all
with fingers. Apple won 6 out of 7 of the patents in dispute, including
those that cover design. According to the verdict, Samsung violated the
design patent for the front of the iPhone on all but one of its phones.
On the home screen patent, Samsung was in violation with all of its
phones, the jury found.
Samsung's Galaxy Tab
10.1 tablet faces market removal and Apple could move forward to request
injunctions in efforts to bar infringing Samsung smartphones. Apple's
software and design infringement claims extend to a wide range of
Samsung smartphones, including its Nexus S 4G and S II. Apple could get a
ruling banning their sale.
Samsung will have the chance to appeal to the federal court of appeals in Washington, D.C., which could take a year or more to play out.

SANA
says Tuesday's blast in Jaramana targeted a funeral procession for two
people who were killed the previous day. The news agency says it was the
third bombing in Jaramana in the past 24 hours.
An
Associated Press reporter who visited the scene shortly after the 2
p.m. blast says the bomb badly damaged a five-story building and burned
at least 10 cars to charred hulks.

As Isaac bears down on the U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday its storm continues to intensify with strong winds becoming more powerful and rainfall becoming heavier. It is likely to test the region's new flood control systems that were put in place following the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina seven years ago.
In the coming hours tropical storm winds will already smash into the region, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, and regions 200 miles out from Isaac's center will be hit due to the size of the storm.
It looks increasingly likely that Hurricane Isaac will follow the path of Katrina and strike New Orleans, which is still recovering from the devastation it experienced seven years ago on Aug. 25, 2005. At that time more than 1,800 people were killed and billions of dollars of damage was caused.
It is believed Isaac will cause extensive flooding in cities and towns in at least three Gulf Coast states, and a storm surge of up to 12 feet is currently being touted. Heavy rainfall could see as much as 18 inches in some areas, which will spark further flooding across coastal regions.
Katrina was a category 3 hurricane, but at the moment Isaac is still predicted to only become a category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of about 90 mph. However, Isaac's size and slow moving pace could cause serious issues across the Gulf Coast, and flooding will be one of the major concerns.

Louisiana authorities have closed the floodgates surrounding the east bank of Orleans Parish Tuesday to protect the area from Tropical Storm Isaac as it approaches landfall.
The Times Picayune reported that all 127 perimeter floodgates have been sealed.
Tropical Storm Isaac has been rolling over the Gulf of Mexico toward Louisiana, forecasters say the storm will likely sustain hurricane-force wind by the time it hits the state’s swampy coast early Wednesday.
The forecast track has the storm aimed at New Orleans, but hurricane warnings extended across 280 miles from Morgan City, La., to the Florida-Alabama state line. It could become the first hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast since 2008.
